The Virtual Pathology Museum is a searchable online catalogue that currently contains images of over 3,000 specimens from the museums within Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), specifically for medicine and dentistry. Some specimens have supporting text scanned from original museum documents dating back to the beginning of the last century.

The museums are:

The collections from these two museums have now been merged resulting in a diverse and comprehensive collection at the West Smithfield campus, and a small reserve held at the Whitechapel site. In early 2019 a process of reorganising the West Smithfield Museum was started that will eventually result in several sub collections: those that are of historic significance; those over 100 years old; a medico-legal collection; a forensic medicine display; pathology of the brain, heart, lung, kidney, liver, gut, reproductive system and musculo-skeletal system. Whilst this reorganisation is going on the on-line catalogue may not always identify accurately where specimens are located. This will be rectified over time. Please consult museum staff if you wish to view specimens by emailing bartspathology@qmul.ac.uk

Access to the online catalogue

All users must complete an online registration form. Access is then automatically granted to staff and students whose email address lies in a known academic or clinical domain. Other users will normally be sent an email (usually within two working days) asking for a reference before access is granted.

Access to the specimens

Access to view the physical specimens can be requested by emailing bartspathology@qmul.ac.uk.
